Gall Stones - Nutritional Remedy
Today's ASK Doctor T: Gall Stones - Nutritional Remedy
Question: I have been told that I have gallstones and would like to know what I can do to to alleviate the problem and/or make them disappear by nutritional means.
Answer: To answer such a question responsibly, I would need to know what size are the gallstones, how many are they, are they calcified or not (were they diagnosed using X-ray images or ultrasound?), and whether or not you have any symptoms that increase the urgency of the situation.
There are some nutritional protocols (lipotropic substances such as choline and inositol) to improve bile flow, reduce fatty infiltration of the liver, and increase fat digestion in general, which in some cases are all that is needed to eliminate symptoms. In other cases, where biliary production or secretion has drastically declined, a bile supplement may be needed.
Additionally, there is a self-help procedure (the “Liver-Gallbladder Flush”) that helps liquefy your bile within the biliary tree, improving its flow and in some cases perhaps removing some of the smallest gallstones. Beware of web sites that tell you about “hundreds of gall stones” or about “large stones” that have been “removed” that way- such “stones” are too large to have passed via your bile ducts (they would present as a medical emergency if they actually did), and are just a product of saponification (making “soap” from the ingredients you take during the program). If a calcified stone larger than 1 CM diameter passes through, you may be in excruciating pain. That’s why more info is needed. But generally, the Liver-Gallbladder Flush program is a safe procedure to improve bile flow by clearing biliary paths within the liver, and this can improve many gallbladder symptoms or gallbladder-related symptoms! If you do this on your own, please be aware that you do so at your own risk (no matter how small!). Either way, my assistant Joe (612-870-2974) can give you the sheet explaining the process and the few inexpensive products it requires.
