I am back from an arduous lecture-and-patients tour of Israel and Italy! After seeing nutritional and skin-lesion patients in the Tel Aviv area, I traveled a bit north to lecture at an environmental health conference, focusing on the connection between our genetics and susceptibility to illness as a result of environmental, nutritional, hormonal, and emotional influences.

The important concept of “epi-genetics” was emphasized in that lecture. How many times have we heard health experts blame “genetics” (our inherited DNA structure) as the cause for many chronic disorders from acne to obesity and from autoimmune disorders to cancer?

Well, it’s true that genetic tendencies play a role in the evolution of dysfunction. But recent scientific advances have shown conclusively that epi-genetic elements (emotional stress, pollution, food choices, immune imbalance, microbial overgrowth, nutritional supplementation, exercise, hygiene, sleep, etc.) play a much greater role in dis-ease formation then the DNA sequence we were born with! In fact, epi-genetic factors strongly determine whether or not your genetic predispositions will manifest as actual disease!

Nevertheless, in today’s environment it is increasingly important to know our structural (inherited) genetic tendencies, because increasing levels of toxic pollutants, infectious agents, drugs, and sources of stress push us to the brinks of manifesting our genetic propensities. In other words, our epi-genetic influences are overwhelming our capacity to resist illness, causing our inherited weaknesses to become reality all too often, and leading to the current epidemic of chronic disease.

During the first few days of my trip I have been contemplating these issues further and concluded that the greatest influence I can have on people’s epigenetic factors would be through the 90-day detoxification program that I originated early this winter. For example, the recommended blood test for food and environmental sensitivities has been proven reliable, reproducible and highly effective (in one study, 98.5% of people who resisted weight loss succeeded in attaining their weight goal simply by following the results of this blood test). I invite you to join my next group to Nepal for a humanitarian trek (Community Eco-Tourism) among sub-Himalayan villages.

This 2-week-long November trip will be my 20th(!) trek in Nepal. All the proceeds support sustainable local non-profit activities in destitute villages. This experience has transformed so many people’s lives in the past – mentally and spiritually – that I would recommend it to ANYONE. It allows us to shift the focus away from ourselves and toward the needs of others. It enriches us with global knowledge of sustainability that we can use indefinitely upon returning to our homes. And it’s fun! Life must contain some play!
