Audience Responses from Dr. T's Fall 2011 Lecture at Harvard University(1) October 28, 2011 Dear Professor Cohen, I wanted to thank you for inviting me to Dr. Tel-Oren’s lecture at Harvard. I went into the talk a bit skeptical of “alternative healthcare,” but I soon discovered that what Dr. T was discussing was logical and backed up by a lot of scientific research and personal experience. Being a biology major and in the premed program here at Boston College, I felt I understood the lecture and I learned a lot from Dr. Tel-Oren that will help me throughout my medical education. I used to be very hesitant to admit there were any benefits of holistic medicine; however, I had been combining all types of alternative medicine into one category and writing it off without looking at some methods’ true effectiveness. Dr. Tel-Oren helped me see that some alternative and holistic medicine can be equally or more useful than orthodox medicine in many instances. During the lecture, I especially liked the way Dr. T focused on how doctors need to treat the cause of individuals’ illness and not just their symptoms. It’s fairly common to prescribe a lifelong drug regimen for certain illnesses, but this oftentimes only serves to alleviate the patients’ symptoms. Moreover, this reliance on drugs is not only expensive and toxic, but it neglects to address the real causes of illness. When Dr. Tel-Oren discussed how it may be possible to do something as simple as change a person’s diet and give them science-based supplement therapy to cure a chronic disease, I began to realize what an incredible difference his research could make in so many individuals’ lives. Of course more studies need to be conducted and practitioners must question the effectiveness of any diagnostic and therapeutic methods or they would not be practicing good science (as Dr. T repeatedly stated). However, if Dr. Tel-Oren can attain consistent positive results using logical dietary and functional medicine approaches, then his research could change the way doctors see patients and practice medicine. I learned a lot from the lecture that I hope to utilize when I enter the medical field in the U.S. I know there are many issues with the healthcare system in this country, but I feel that a lot of things Dr. T was discussing will help me to be a better doctor while working in the system we currently have. Above all I’ve learned it’s so important to think critically and with an open mind about all options available to a patient. However, I also know to focus on the science and choose the best course of care for my patient based on reliable research produced by unbiased individuals. Additionally, I hope that when I finish my schooling I will continue to study and maintain the level of enthusiasm for my work that I saw Dr. Tel-Oren clearly still possesses. A particular part of the lecture that really resonated with me was Dr. Tel-Oren’s plan to transform an entire country’s healthcare system. Dr. T spoke with such intelligence, determination, and passion that I have no doubt he will see his ideas through. It would be truly incredible if by the point that I finish my medical education Dr. Tel-Oren’s study results will be published and changing healthcare in that country. Hopefully, I will then be able to be a part of changes in the U.S. healthcare system as a result of his research which, I believe, has the potential to be incredibly influential worldwide. Thank you again for the lecture invitation, I’m very glad I had the opportunity to see Dr. Tel-Oren speak and meet him after the talk. I obviously learned a lot and Dr. T has really motivated me to think about my future in medicine and the impact I could have one day. I can’t wait to see the effects Dr. Tel-Oren’s research will have on the healthcare delivery system in the near future and the resulting benefits people will experience worldwide from his ideas one day. Sincerely, Tess Baril (2) Dear Prof. Cohen, My wife and I attended last night’s seminar by Dr. Tel-Oren. I was hoping to thank you personally for bringing the doctor to Harvard, but given the number of people at the end asking questions of you both, I decided to contact you via email. I represent Christian Science in Massachusetts in the media and in government lawmaking as well as being a Christian Science practitioner. As such, I’m very interested in following the latest thinking on healing practices (traditional and otherwise). Dr. Tel-Oren’s presentation was very informative and quite impressive. He is clearly a remarkable individual – an individual who has obviously given considerable depth of thought and practice to the short-comings and promises of allopathic and holistic medicine. Again, many thanks for such a fine seminar. All the best, Ken (3) Dr. Tel-Oren, I want you to know that I am grateful that I was able to attend your lecture at Harvard University. Your review of some of the underlying problems with our healthcare delivery was highly informative. The fact that you concluded by proposing a multi-layered plan of action for improving healthcare in the U.S. and other countries worldwide excited the audience and gave us hope for what may lie ahead. Thank you for coming to Boston. Sincerely,
(4) To my friends in Boston and Cape Cod: It was exciting to be at the Harvard University lecture and to be actually hearing a doctor, Adiel Tel-Oren, courageous enough to be addressing our broken American Health System. But what was more exciting was the fact that Dr. Tel-Oren shared his vision and plan about how a shift could be done. His plan sounded doable and practical. The solution in fixing the problem would require a long term positive relationship between American politicians, doctors and other players internationally and nationally. We have been told most of our lives that we had to choose between value and values. But that is a false choice. Partnerships that are created based in core values of awareness and formed with an attitude of high standards of ethics, cooperation and service, are powerful and long-lasting. So, I see the possibility of the new vision for the American health system working out successfully for all — and the costs are much less. In addition, there are monies to be made from creating and promoting a new industry of well-being and of being responsible for one's health. It's a paradigm shift that many are open and willing to take on. I am grateful to be witnessing Dr. Tel-Oren's work that contributes to the physical well-being of people, and thus the well-being of our entire planet, now and in the future. Thank you! Sacred wellness, peace, love and joy always, (5) Dear Dr. Adiel Tel-Oren, Medical science, while often deficient in the strategies of healing it pursues, has diagnostic capacities that are unprecedented in the history of humanity. As a medical doctor, and functional medical practitioner, you can mobilize the empirical prowess of medical science to ascertain the degree of validity of all attempts to heal that are worth investigating, by virtue of preliminary evidence of their success, or their conceptual intrigue and plausibility. Your understanding of holistic, chiropractic, nutritional, traditional and other attempts to heal puts you in a position to know what to investigate. By applying state of the art biostatistical methodologies to your scrutiny of myriad healing arts, what is valid and replicable will be granted the status of verified science. Anecdotal evidence that now leads many to follow harmful or insufficiently examined practices will be replaced by careful scientific evidence that will provide an informed basis for pursing an optimal course of treatment or prevention. The result of your efforts will be a monumental alleviation of suffering for humanity. With rare diligence and integrity, you have achieved expertise in a range of disciplines. You speak with unrelenting lucidity, remarkably balanced discernment, and a gift for sensing what is partially valid and salvageable even in approaches that you understand have demonstrable weaknesses. Your love for science, and for applying it toward the relief of human suffering, was inspiring to me and to my students. My enthusiasm about your work goes beyond my admiration for your brilliance and devotion in amassing such extensive knowledge in disciplines where exclusive specialization almost always prevails. You approach each of these disciplines with a rare blend of generosity and critical power. You are remarkably free from credulity, and are insistent on subjecting all claims to the tribunal of science; yet you do not let your critical incisiveness get in the way of searching out the benefits of approaches that are not yet able to defend themselves, or articulate the mechanism of their success. I would be honored to support you in bringing forward a more deeply scientific, responsible and visionary healing. Science can be directed in inspired directions. You more than anyone I have encountered have the capacity to place the benevolent neutrality of science in the service of the ethical project of alleviating the unfathomable suffering of humanity from preventable disease. I am moved by your incisive approach to making salutary interventions long before disease onset, and to reversing disease in its most incipient stages. We both are committed to building a world where the simple intention to heal prevails over other motives. I will do all I can to bring recognition to your work in the citadels of research and scholarship. Your passionate gathering of the medical and healing skills necessary to conceive new approaches to healing, and to verify any approach that can withstand scientific scrutiny, makes your work deserving of respectful attention throughout the academic and scientific world. James Martin Transformed My name is James Martin and I am 59 years old. Most of my life I have been a very healthy person, a very energetic outgoing person, fun person, loved to be around people, loved to be active and always had an extremely vigorous appetite. I love to eat. I was raised around good cooks. My mother, grandmother and ex-wife were great cooks. And eating was always a very, very big thing with me. I ate just about anything and everything. I loved all kinds of meat and pork, and was a very, very big dessert eater. And I was gaining weight in my belly. About 15 years ago my health started changing. The very first noticeable change came as tiredness. I began to feel sluggish and rundown a lot, falling asleep a lot. Whenever I was sitting down anywhere, even in the movies, I would dose off into a sleep. I never understood why I had no energy. Also, over 10 years ago I started having a problem with cold feet. My feet constantly stayed cold no matter what. I could be in a nice warm house and warm bed and my feet were just cold. And then later I started feeling a numbing sort of feeling like my feet were dead. I Never knew what was wrong. A little later on I began to notice this same cold feeling in my hands. Anytime I would shake hands with people they would comment on how cold my hands were. And there was this tingling, numbing sensation in my fingers. I went to a doctor and I was diagnosed with diabetes, I think my sugar was around 460. And they put me on Glucotrol for the rest of my life. About that same time I began to notice a swelling in my feet. I was retaining fluid. Also I started noticed a problem with impotence. And that got worse. For the last five years I had been completely impotent. And my health in general started falling apart. I was suffering with high blood pressure. All kind of things were going wrong with me. And it was really getting to me. It was depressing me a lot. I was becoming irritable and withdrawn. It had a very negative effect on my relationships with family and friends and co-workers and clients. I was just becoming a very bitter person. I also had what might have been rheumatism or arthritis in the right shoulder and lower part of the neck. Sometimes the pain was very, very intense. And again I was becoming very, very depressed because my body was just falling apart. And I knew that if I didn't somehow make a change that I probably would not live very much longer. Finally, 2 years ago I suffered two mild heart attacks. And the doctors in the hospital wanted to perform an open heart, bypass surgery. And I refused to let them do it. My family pressured me into going along with these operations. Still I refused to do it. The doctors were extremely upset with me and threatened that I will not survive without surgery. The doctors put me on eight different prescription drugs and told me I would have to spend the rest of my life taking these drugs. They said I would not survive without them. I was never comfortable with these drugs and their side effects. I didn't feel right. It's hard to describe what it was that I felt. And in my heart I always believed that there was a better, more natural way to deal with diseases and sickness. But I had never had the strength to actually do it myself. Well, as of July 1st, July 1, 2003, thanks to the food at Ecopolitan Restaurant, I decided to go on an all-natural, organic, plant based diet. And I started walking. I have kept a daily journal of my progress. Within 3 months, everything has completely turned around. I now have far more energy than I have had in years. And I'm not taking any drugs! I still have the 8 unfinished bottles at home to prove it! I will never go back to these drugs again! Before the change in my diet, I also had a breathing problem because of the heart attacks and swelling, retaining of fluids. I could barely breathe just coming up a few steps. I was completely out of breath and exhausted. Just bending over tying my shoes I was out of breath. Just trying to put my clothes on I was out of breath. Even while lying up in bed it was a struggle to breath at times. I could only walk very little, and very, very slowly. Well, about 4 days into my diet, my breath just got better. And it's gotten better and better every day since. Now, 3 months later, I am walking ten miles rapidly every day. I'm running up the stairs now! I sleep better but need less sleep. Before, I would wake up anywhere from two to four times a night to go to the bathroom, I would stay in bed sluggish until late morning. Now, most nights I sleep straight through, and wake up early at 5 or 6 ready to go, I have all this energy. I feel so much better!! My attitude has changed. I feel inspired. I feel alive again for the first time. I check my sugar levels every morning. It is always in the 80's and 90's now, no matter how many desserts I eat at Ecopolitan, whereas before it was 200, sometimes 300 and 400 even with the diabetes drug Glucotrol. I am off of all medication and feeling great. My blood pressure is now normal. The pain in my shoulder has all but disappeared. Another thing I have noticed in the last few weeks is that my feet and hands are feeling warm. I have more feeling in my feet and hands now. The tingling in my fingers is not nearly as intense as it was; it's very, very faint now. I am getting better. I feel much better. I'm looking better. I've lost 40 pounds in the last ninety-one days, my potbelly is gone! And it just goes on and on. I feel so hopeful and thankful. My attitude has changed. My personality is coming back. I am beginning to love being around people again. Also, my impotence problem is clearing up! That has made me tremendously happy. I feel fantastically good. I feel like I have traded in an old, battered, used body for a newer body, and added many more years to my life. And for that I thank God everyday. I could go on and on and on, there is so much more I could say - I just feel so wonderful and hopeful. And thank God for Ecopolitan, with their help I cannot see myself ever returning to the old way of eating again. Not with all the good things that I am experiencing here. I would not have been able to do it without the delicious meals and desserts at Ecopolitan. I eat there every day, sometime twice a day. I still love to eat. With Ecopolitan it is very easy to eat organic vegetarian raw food and desserts, because they are always so unbelievably tasty and satisfying! I thought the food would be boring when I first heard about raw foods, but the food at Ecopolitan is so interesting and beautiful, I never get bored! This helps me stick with my new healthy lifestyle. Ecopolitan has saved my life! Written : October 1, 2003 Addition - December 29, 2003Three months after my previous letter to you, I am happy to say I feel even healthier then I was then. I am bringing all my medical and hospital records to Dr. T at Ecopolitan as supportive evidence for this entire testimonial. I lost another 15 pounds, for a total of 55 pounds since I discovered Ecopolitan restaurant and became a raw vegan. Now I am at my ideal weight, my sugar level is always normal so I no longer have diabetes, and I feel better than ever. I am stable now, not needing or wanting any change. I feel that this is a lifetime commitment to health, not a temporary fad diet. This is my permanent lifestyle now. I don't even wish to go back to the old foods, I miss nothing! I enjoy learning about health and prevention and nutrition from Dr. T at the free Tuesday meetings I regularly attend at Ecopolitan. I will continue a raw vegan organic diet and healthy nutrition forever, and Ecopolitan's natural cuisine makes it so easy and enjoyable!
F.H. from Upstate New-YorkI have been significantly overweight most of my adult life and at one time or another tried just about every diet out there. On some of them, I would lose 20 pounds or so and then it would be too hard to keep up the diet. This all changed less than months ago, when I began to eat mostly raw - vegan foods, with Dr. T's encouragement. The difference this time is that this is not a diet; it is a way of life. Never do I feel deprived because I have found replacements for some of my favorite foods and have not missed the rest. As of this writing, I have lost 70 pounds. During this time, I have gone through several plateaus and come out the other side successfully, and will continue to do so. No matter how slow or fast the weight comes off though, one thing that will stay the same is how great I feel for changing my lifestyle. My energy level and general feeling of wellness have increased to a level I have not felt in years. An unexpected benefit has been relief from the severe menstrual problems (excruciating, paralyzing cramps, heavy bleeding, etc.) from which I suffered during the last several years. Those problems disappeared when I stopped eating meat and dairy products and focused on unprocessed plant-based foods. Even though there is still so much for me to learn, I am looking forward to the future, feeling healthier and happier about my food choices. F.H. December 3, 2003 Testimonial by a local dinerDear Ecopolitan, I am a 53-year-old woman from South Minneapolis, slightly overweight, who has discovered raw food (living foods) just 3 weeks ago, upon visiting Ecopolitan restaurant, enjoying your delicious raw cuisine (and organic wine...) immensely, and reading the literature you generously made available to me. I became almost entirely a raw-foodist two weeks ago, and the changes in my body are staggering! Since 3 weeks ago, I have effortlessly lost 20 pounds, without any hunger or sense of dissatisfaction. The foods are becoming more tasty every day, whether I eat at Ecopolitan or at home (I often take-out your dishes, desserts, crackers, pates, and pizza crusts, surprising all the detractors, including my doctor, who think I'm eating nothing but celery sticks and carrots...). Additionally, during the last two weeks I have been experiencing great things, like wonderful alertness and fantastic amounts of energy that I never thought I could have. It all seems so unbelievably good that I must do a frequent reality check, telling myself that this situation may just be a sweet dream and that it can't possibly last. Then I realize that I'm not on some hallucinogenic drug but simply on a new dietary lifestyle that is satisfying and permanent, and that what I'm experiencing is be a renewed level of health that I can sustain forever. Thank you, Ecopolitan, for giving me a fabulous Holiday gift of good life! J.M. W., Dr. T's course attendee from VirgniaDear Dr. Tel-Oren, Happy Holidays! I just want you to know that after your nutrition and health course here in Virginia last month, my husband and I have adopted natural vegan eating for the most part, and a shift in thinking. He is down to his ideal weight -- having lost 20 lbs. and I am getting there, having lost 11 inches and 10 lbs. I also looked at my face closely yesterday, and yes, you have made me more beautiful. I feel it inside, too. Thanks so much for taking your precious time to come over to my daughter's place that night, remove the moles and give me a gift that keeps on giving....choosing health. Who you are makes a difference. W.
B.B., Dr. T's Patient from CaliforniaI was diagnosed with asthma years ago and have been using an inhaler at night off and on for 15 years or so. Especially in the last couple of years, I've had to use my inhaler at least once a night and sometimes twice a night to be able to breathe. I was starting to get a bit panicked about it. I hated using inhalers but if I didn't I would be gasping for air and unable to sleep. 3 months ago I had a phone consultation with Dr. T, and he advised to get an air purifier and take Oxygenics full-spectrum antioxidants with vitamin A and high-dose carotenoids. I bought the small Austin air purifier he recommended and put it in my bedroom and started taking the Oxygenics at the dose he prescribed. I was breathing easily almost immediately. It's really been quite miraculous. I started this regimen a month ago and haven't used an inhaler once since then. And my breathing has improved during the day too. Thank you Dr. T for giving me my breath back!
